The Sporades islands consist of four islands (Skopelos, Skiathos, Alonissos and Skyros) that are grouped together near the Euboean Coast of the Aegean Sea. In fact, there are a lot of small islands and rocky outcroppings around the four main islands which number more than 700, of which only 9 are inhabited.

The islands are amongst the greenest areas in the Med with nearly three quarters of their grounds being covered by the Mediterranean pine. Many of the beaches in the Sporades have been awarded the European Blue Flag, which confirm they are amongst the cleanest waters and beaches in Europe. It is also one of the best sailing areas in the Aegean, with many protected coves and many islets to get away from it all!

HOLLYWOOD COMES TO SKOPELOS!
The mix of Hollywood stars and a quiet Greek island in the middle of the Aegean may seem a strange combination to some.  But this was the essence that captured the imagination of director Phillida Lloyd when searching for a location for her feature film debut ‘Mamma Mia’ http://www.mamma-mia.com/movie.asp?sec=movie .  A hit on both Broadway and on the London stage, the film adaptation began filming on Skopelos in August and will continue through September.  In her pursuance to find the perfect location, Ms. Lloyd personally took to the air by helicopter searching the skies of Greece to find the right location for her first big- budget film.  Scouring the islands and mainland from the west coast to the far east of the country, she finally spotted the jewels of Skopelos sparkling from below.  Its contrasting mountains of deep green pine forests and clear turquoise waters lapping against sun-kissed white beaches created a stunning backdrop for the story.  Without knowing exactly where she was, nor the island’s name – there was no doubt in her mind when she saw the emerald isle of Skopelos from above – her search was over!

Big name stars such as Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Tom Hanks are spending their leisure time strolling along the waterfront and shopping in the local shops of Skopelos Town.  The relaxed atmosphere seems to be what they crave and apart from the initial excitement of seeing them ‘amongst’ us, they are beginning to blend in with the local scenery now.
