Boat trips

Take a stroll round to the Old Port in the evening and you can find out about the many boat trips which are on offer. Many boats can take you around the island stopping at Lalaria, Kastro, Asselinos and Tsougria or trips over to the uninhabited neighbouring islands of Tsougria and Arkos both with beautiful beaches and tavernas where you can sunbathe, swim and enjoy delicious greek cuisine and cool refreshments. You can also visit one of the sister islands Skopelos and Alonissos where they also have a marine park and if you're lucky you might even get to see some dolphins. Most boats tend to leave mid-morning and return late afternoon. Water-taxis run from the old port which will take you to many of the popular beaches on the island, whatever way you choose you can't beat the beautiful views you will see from the water.

Day trips

There are many places of interest on the island including 4 monasteries - Aghios Charalambos, Evangelistria, Panaghia Kechrea and Panaghia Kounistra as well as several little churches. Kastro meaning the old castle is the old capital city with many ruins around the hillside showing the large population that used to live there. There are also many churches some of which have been restored and this restoration still continues. The views are amazing from here as it sits on a high cliff on the north side of the island and is well worth a visit. In Skiathos Town you will find Papadiamantis House where one of the most important Greek authors lived and died. It has been transformed into a modern museum with a lot of everyday personal objects the writer used on show. Hire a 4x4 and take a drive around the north side of the island where the scenery is very different from the south or walk around the protected area of Strofilia lake surrounded by the ecological parklands.

Other activities

There is a horse-riding centre on the island which caters for beginners and the more experienced and even donkey rides for children. They do various tours depending on your capability with rides through the beautiful woodlands and past stunning beaches. Visit the dog shelter at Kounistria and spend one of your days walking some of the dogs that they have taken into their care. If you feel like something more energetic, there is a tennis club in town with 4 clay courts and 1 artificial grass court. It is floodlit to enable you to wait until the evening when it's a bit cooler. Many people go walking on the island following the dirt tracks through the woodlands, up the mountains discovering beaches, churches and monasteries.
