Greece, Summer 2014

Dear friends & guests,

ThalposIt is a pleasure for all of us to keep up with the same pathos as when we first started our business here in Skopelos, a relatively unknown little Greek island back in 1992. For the last two decades we have always tried to keep up with the latest tech and marketing technics as times dictate but on top of our list it was always been and will be our genuine interest for all of you to have a rewarding holiday experienceand to be able to savour the islands with a deeper more insite understanding of local life, customs and of course their many natural beauties including beautiful turquise seas, small little fishing villages, suprisingly rich interiors and heavently climate. We are currently run a few offers which you will find tempting to inquire about.

I would like to personally take the chance to thank you all, past and new guests who are trusting your holidays with us for the last 22 years and hope to see you on the islands!

Skopelos before Spring ..!
By Makis

ThalposWe have had a surprisingly mild winter this year in our beautiful island retreat of Skopelos. Precious rain drops were hopefully plenty throughout winter and even spring ridden May, to fill our water reservoirs and keep our paradise Green. In more than one occasions we witnessed the sheer power of the Gods.

Aeolus put up an impressive display of power with strong, almost hurricane winds. Poseidon decided to cooperate with him this time and created some waves that even Hawaiian surfers would surely envy.

This month is always a joy to be here and witness firsthand the burgeoning blossom of wild flowers and trees, everywhere your eye can see. Nature has calmed down by now and is performing once again with a spectacular show of colour and the reawakening of our senses.

New restaurant hits town
By Malou

ThalposAfter a long yet mild winter, spring always brings this very special feeling of joy and excitement of the season ahead. The water front 'wakes up' and slowly, chairs and tables are put out for a fresh coat of paint, new colourful cushions and cheerful "Hello, Welcome Back" 's remind us that summer really is approaching !

And along with summer a rich choice of delicious meals. We have yet again been blessed with a lovely new restaurant, Zoupa, specializing in traditional Greek cuisine but with an exotic touch adding that "something special" that makes it stand out. My warmest recommendations - try that magic Moussaka, one of the best I have had during my 27 years in Greece.

Our new team member.
By Makis

ThalposWe are proud to announce that we acquired an old time friend and colleague as of this season in our precious team. After the departure of Mike and his return back to the UK, Andonis joined as our next Customer Representative. He has been in this business for most of his adult life, joining our office back in the 90's, for our first 2 years of operation, and while he was still at school.

We welcome him back and wish him a great season ahead !!!

Skopelos at Easter
By Alekos

Thalpos Every four years the Catholic and Orthodox Easter fall on the same week, and the early tourists of April, along with Skopelitans and Europeans that live on the island, had more reasons to celebrate together on the 20th of April.

Easter Sunday was a pure joy with clear blue skies and temperatures that made most people sunbathe, eat and drink by the sea with friends and families. For most tavernas along Panormos and Agnondas beach, this was their first opening day and a good operational trial for the season ahead.

The few brave individuals had their first attempt to swim in the sea, showing off their courage and tempting at the same time the rest of the bystanders as well. The Mamma Mia beach (Kastani), and its beach bar were opened with summer tunes and plenty of refreshing summer drinks going around, while its rebellious youth danced and swam as if they could not wait for summer to arrive.

Mayoral Elections
By Andonis

ThalposAnother huge and exciting national event that is not over yet this May is the Mayoral election of the local municipality, along with its team of councilors. For the first time in Skopelos there were 4 mayoral candidates that had to literally race and compete in order to find the best and most suitable teams of candidates, (minimum of 21 people in each team). As you can imagine, in an island the size and population of Skopelos, this proved to be a little challenging as it involved most families from all 3 major villages of the island.

The 4 parties will compete against each other throughout May, electioneering with small town politics and tactics.

Thalpo-licious Recipe of the Month
By Peppy

Greek Halva recipe.

ThalposFor the halva:
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1/2 cup corn oil
- 2 cups semolina (1 1/2 cup coarse and 1/2 cup thin)
- 1/4 of a cup blond raisins (optional)
- 1 cup walnuts (optional)

For the syrup:
- 3 cups of sugar (or 2 cups sugar and 1 cup honey)
- 4 cups of water
- 1 tsp grounded cinnamon
- 1 whole clove (optional)

1. To prepare this delicious Greek halva recipe, start by preparing the syrup. Add all the ingredients into a pan over high heat and bring to the boil. Boil until the sugar has dissolved and the syrup slightly thickens. Set aside, but keep warm.
2. To prepare the halva heat the oil in a large pot and add gradually the semolina. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon to allow the semolina to absorb the oil. When the semolina starts to bubble, turn the heat down and allow to toast until golden (whilst constantly stirring). The more you toast the mixture for the halva, the darker it will become. So be careful not to over toast it, as the semolina will burn and the halva will become bitter.
3. Remove the pot from the stove and pour in the warm syrup. Stir with a wooden spoon and return the pot on the stove. Cook the halva (whilst stirring) until the mixture thickens and pulls away easily from the sides of the pan.
4. Remove the pot from the stove, add the raisins and ? of the walnuts and blend. Cover the halva with a towel and let it rest for 10 minutes. Pour the halva mixture into a pudding mold or into individual bowls.
5. Allow to cool for about 1 1/2 hour before serving. Garnish with some cinnamon powder and the rest of the walnuts.
